Man has lived in this area since prehistoric times , many Archaeologists think that the Greek colony of Hearclea was
located in the area!
It is believed that the area was 1st inhabited around 1320 - 1390 with an influx of locals
in 1512 as they fled from the mainland onto the island from the Turks. The present church dates from 1615 and
was restored in the 19th century. On top of the village are the remains of a fortification - orginal construction started
by the French.
In the past most people made a living from fishing the beautiful and plentiful waters , agriculture
and traditional jobs. However, now many have turned their options towards tourism as the area is increasing in popularity
, whilst still retaining its natural , friendly and welcoming charm.
